A camp blanket displays your scouting history
A camp blanket has two purposes:
1. It’s a place to sew on all those badges that don’t belong on your current uniform! These include badges from a previous section, badges that are only worn for a prescribed period of time and “blanket badges” or swapped badges that have never been on your uniform.
2. As well as showing off all your patches and badges it’s also a comfy second layer to keep a scout warm on top of their sleeping bag.
Obtaining Your Camp Blanket
Any blanket can be your camp blanket
Old woollen blankets can be found in your grandparents’ attic or in charity shops. Some army surplus stores also stock them and there are always plenty for sale on e-bay. You can buy fleece fabric from most material shops or Ikea and many outdoor shops sell fleece blankets in various colours
A few options that we recommend are listed below
- Mountain Warehouse

You can also buy a new badge blanket or a fleece poncho from Scout Shops Ltd.

Making Your Camp Blanket
A camp blanket is usually made by taking a standard blanket and cutting a hole in the middle so that it can be worn like a poncho. The “hole” needs to be reinforced by blanket stitch or by sewing on some binding tape. Another option is just to throw it over your shoulders with no holes or fastenings at all – it really is up to you!
